De Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen is rijk aan expertise op het terrein van onder meer de filosofie, godsdienstwetenschappen, geschiedenis, kunsten, kunstgeschiedenis, letterkunde, taalkunde en regiostudies van vrijwel de gehele wereld. De breedheid van de faculteit, maar vooral haar wereldwijde expertise, internationale gerichtheid, succesvolle onderzoek en de veelheid van elkaar versterkende wetenschappelijke benaderingen, bepalen haar profiel.

Er bestaat in Leiden zowel unieke en diepgaande kennis van een veelheid van talen, als wereldwijde deskundigheid op allerlei gebieden van kunst en cultuur. Door die combinatie van expertises in één faculteit zijn Leidse geesteswetenschappers in staat tot culturele en historische diepgang in hun onderwijs en onderzoek, en tegelijk ook tot duiding van de moderne samenleving.

The Faculty of Humanities hosts a wealth of expertise in fields including philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics, and area studies, covering practically the entire world. The breadth of the Faculty, but especially its world-wide expertise, international orientation, successful research programmes, and the multitude of mutually reinforcing approaches, together determine the Faculty's profile.

Leiden is a unique centre for the advanced study of many languages and can claim world-class expertise in a whole range of artistic and cultural phenomena. This range of knowledge and competence within a single Faculty allows scholars of the humanities in Leiden to combine cultural and historical analysis at the highest academic level with insights into present-day society.
