I am a neonatologist, a physician who cares for sick and premature newborns. My husband Steve has early onset Alzheimer's disease but something happened in May 2008 that altered the course of his disease. While researching the risks and benefits of two drugs about to begin clinical trials, I happened upon another treatment, a medical food with the active ingredient a medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil that is extracted from coconut oil. I recognized MCT oil because we added it to the feedings of our tiniest babies thirty years ago and now it is in nearly every infant formula along with coconut oil. It is also an important component of breast milk. Coconut oil contains about 60% MCTs. Insulin resistance in the brain is an important feature of Alzheimer's and cells malfunction due to lack of glucose entering the cell as a result. When consumed, part of MCTs are converted to ketones, an alternative fuel that brain cells can easily switch over to using since insulin is not required. Ketones can provide some of the energy needed by the brain. Steve had a dramatic improvement in May 2008 that continued for a full year before his condition leveled off. Nearly 400 people with Alzheimer's, other dementias, Parkinson's, memory problems, ALS and other disorders have sent me emails indicating that they too have had improvement while taking coconut and/or MCT oil, some very dramatic like Steve. Considering the lack of other treatments for these nightmare diseases, what do you have to lose?
