Anastasiia is a declaration of love from a Kyivan student to her foreign lover and her native land, Ukraine. Through parallel streams of texts and images a dialogue between Anastasiia and her lover is reconstructed over a period of three years in which Ukraine faced major changes. Above all, Anastasiia’s report is an interpretation and exploration of her daily life and a reflection on closeness and warmth in times of confusing propaganda and cultural dilemmas.
Van der Kooy’s depiction of Ukraine leaves room to wonder about the creative way the Ukrainian people deal with current developments in Kyiv, Odessa and Crimea.

Christian van der Kooy (Goes, The Netherlands, 1983) investigates the use of public space in its broadest sense, and reflects on dynamics hidden under the surface of both the built and the natural environment. Listing, analysing and illustrating reality in a new context is the keynote in his work. Any landscape is formed by a myriad of layers, whether they are cultural or economic, physical or metaphysical. Sense of place lies at the heart of his work.
