BackWERK is de uitvinder van de zelfbedieningsbakkerijen! Onder de naam BackWERK werd in februari 2001 in Duitsland de eerste zelfbedieningsbakkerij ooit geopend. Niet veel later volgden nog meer winkels in het Rijn-Roergebied. In 2009 werd de eerste winkel in Nijmegen, Nederland geopend.
