In 1989 werd een stichting opgericht met als doelstelling het historische gebouw van 'De Visserijschool' Nederlands eerste school voor visserij te behouden. 70 Vrijwilligers restaureerden het gebouw en het werd ingericht als maritiem museum dat op 26 maart 1994 werd geopend.
