When nature calls was founded in 1998 and is a well-known smartshop in Amsterdam for both locals and tourists. Since the day we first opened our doors, When Nature calls has contributed and had been witness to the many changes in our industry. Although the Smartshop’s interior and products have changed very much over the last 18 years, we were still able to conserve the mystical and spiritual ambience in our shop. Located next to the beautiful canals of Amsterdam, in the art and fashion district and in the hart of the city centre, when nature calls is the ideal smartshop for tourists to visit.

We sell a variety of natural products in our shop and web shop that can be used for either recreational or medicinal use. Before the rise of modern western medicine, plants were the main source of therapeutic agents throughout the vast majority of human history. The first direct reference to a cannabis product as a psychoactive agent dates from 2737 BC, in the writings of the Chinese emperor Shen Nung. The focus of the literature was on its powers as a medication for rheumatism, gout, malaria, and oddly enough, absent-mindedness. Although recreational and medicinal cannabis has been put down by most governments in the last century, the use of cannabis is at the rise for the last decennia. Social acceptance of cannabis use, the need for alternative treatment in diseases such as epilepsy and scientific papers supporting medicinal effects of cannabis resulted in a significant increase in the number of medicinal cannabis users. In the US there are currently 1.246.170 legal medical cannabis users and this number is estimated to increase to 2.604.075 if medicinal cannabis use is legalized in all 50 US states. In the dried flowers of cannabis there is a wide variety of different molecules present. All these molecules can be categorized into different groups and one of these groups are the cannabinoids. There have been over 100 cannabinoids identified and all these molecules share a similar chemical structure. A special characteristic of cannabinoids is their ability to interact with the human body. Different cells within our own body express receptors on whichcannabinoids from cannabis can bind. When a cannabinoid binds one of these receptors the behaviour of the cell can change. Now you may ask yourself, why on earth do my cells have these receptors that can bind cannabinoids that come from cannabis? The answer to this question is more straight forward as it seems. Our own cells can synthesize molecules that can bind to these receptors as well and these molecules are called endo-cannabinoids. So both cannabinoids present in cannabis (phyto-cannabinoids) and cannabinoids produced by our own body (endo-cannabinoids) can interact with cells expressing the correct receptors and as obvious as it may seem, these receptors are called cannabinoid receptors and all these receptors together make up the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoids can interact with the endocannabinoid system by activating two types of receptors, namely CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are predominantly located in the central nervous system cells. CB1 is expressed outside the central nervous system cells as well, such as immune cells, but expression in these cells is of much lesser quantity compared to in neuronal cells. In contrast to CB1 receptors, CB2 receptors are mainly located in immune cells and are expressed in very low quantities in neuronal cells. THC and CBD are the most commonly known cannabinoids and they both prefer their own cannabinoid receptor to bind. THC mainly binds receptors located in the brain and for this reason THC is cause of the psychotropic effects experienced when smoking cannabis. YA MAN! CBD on the other hand is will not affect your cognitive abilities but it will affect the way your immune system works.
